[Winter Sightseeing in Yamagata] Japan’s World-Class Snow Art — Zao’s Snow Monsters “Juhyo”
One of the most iconic winter sights in Yamagata is the famous Zao Juhyo—
also known as the “Snow Monsters.”

These surreal formations, created by a rare combination of Zao’s unique climate conditions and vegetation, are natural works of art made entirely of snow and ice. They are truly a treasured phenomenon of Yamagata, allowing visitors to witness the awe of nature up close.
During the peak season of the Juhyo, the Zao Onsen Ski Resort hosts the annual Zao Juhyo Festival, featuring various events throughout the celebration period.
The Zao Ropeway also holds a spectacular Juhyo Light-Up, where the towering snow monsters are illuminated with colorful lights against the pitch-black winter sky—creating a dreamlike, otherworldly scene.
Best Season for Viewing Juhyo
Late December – Early March
Peak Viewing: Late January – Early February
These periods are approximate and may vary depending on weather conditions.
