Dewa Sanzan 2025 Season: Shrine Access and Mountain Opening Details

⛰ Sacred Peaks of Tohoku: Dewa Sanzan

One of Japan’s Three Great Sacred Mountains, and a place of deep spiritual rebirth.

🌄 What Is Dewa Sanzan?

Dewa Sanzan refers to three sacred mountains in central Yamagata Prefecture:

  • Mt. Gassan (1,984 m) – “The Mountain of the Past”

  • Mt. Haguro (414 m) – “The Mountain of the Present”

  • Mt. Yudono (1,500 m) – “The Mountain of the Future”

Together, they form one of Japan’s most revered spiritual pilgrimage routes, known as one of the Three Great Sacred Mountains of Japan.

For centuries, these mountains have been sacred to yamabushi (mountain ascetic monks), and visiting all three is said to be a journey of spiritual rebirth — a pilgrimage through one’s past, present, and future.
